ETHICS, HERITAGE AND MICE: A HAPPY MARRIAGE?
5/1/2012 2:48:50 PM

On a recent visit to Lebanon, I was given a countrywide tour of the corporate incentive options available to meeting planners, courtesy of Lebanon-based corporate incentive and travel management company - gatewaylebanon.net.

It appeared to me that the ethos of the company reflected the vibrancy of the destination in that ‘anything is possible in Lebanon’. This included visiting some of the country’s ancient historical sites and being made aware that they could be used for MICE purposes. Coming from Europe this brought into question the ethics related to using places of great historical significance, for the purposes of securing the ultimate ‘wow’ factor for an event.
For me it seemed so refreshing that in a world where ‘political correctness’ regularly goes OTT, there are still places, where such edifices, that have been standing for millennia can be used to encourage business into the country and as importantly breath life into a site that has seen the passing of time and civilizations since Phoenician times.
A case in point is the UNESCO World Heritage site of 'Baalbek' in the fertile 'Bekaa Valley', probably Lebanon’s foremost historical attraction and an awe-inspiring spectacle. Parts of the remains of the gargantuan ‘Temple of Jupiter’ are six of the world’s tallest Roman Columns standing proud at 23 metres. They peer down upon the smaller yet magnificently preserved ‘Temple of Bacchus’, one of the best examples of its kind anywhere in the world.
It is within the ‘Temple of Bacchus’ that the globally-renowned ‘Beirut International Music Festival’ takes place annually. In previous years, the ancient temple walls have reverberated to the sounds of Lebanon’s famous singer ‘Fairuz’, Ella Fitzgerald and Mika; sustaining a sequence of ceremonies that have taken place since the buildings titanic foundation stones were laid. This also provides precedent and credence for other events being held here…maybe even yours!
For those who may still seem uneasy using such a site for an event, the nearby 19th century Palmyra Hotel overlooks the Baalbek ruins, which can be admired from their courtyard. If preferred the Beirut Mövenpick Hotel snd Resort (the only resort hotel in the capital) can provide a boot camp incentive on their private beach and in their Olympic-sized pool, which is sure to settle any disputes!
MONACO'S ROYAL REWARDS
5/1/2012 2:46:21 PM

As London gears up for a spring time Royal wedding, the principality of Monaco will be preparing for their own Royal extravanganza when the civil marriage ceremony of H.S.H Prince Albert II and Miss Charlene Wittstock takes place on 1-2 July, the focal point to Monaco’s ‘Year of Romance 2011’.

Summer-long cultural exhibitions, al fresco concerts and all the pageantry befitting the royal couple is certain to boost tourism.

Already an established MICE destination, the royal nuptials will galvanise this market, while showcasing the diversity of the product to a global audience, the Monaco government and private sector intends to take full advantage.

Having passed a difficult year in 2009; 2010 saw a 15 per cent increase in MICE traffic and forecasts show 2011 to be a bumper year hopefully mirroring the record-breaking figures from 2008. In 2010, the UK market accounted for 19 per cent and was second biggest MICE destination to the principality.

Monaco is looking to vigorously grow the weddings market by offering the ultimate unique selling point (USP) of customising the compact city-state to specific requirements and using the royal wedding as the perfect advert. This is already paying dividends, having recently hosted the principalities biggest Indian wedding (650 guests) using key landmarks, opening shops on a Sunday for guests and even allowing elephants to stride in main thorough-fares.

Hotel rates for all 2600 hotel beds in Monaco have been capped at 2010 rates in an attempt to make the royal wedding experience an all-encompassing affair.

During 2011, the major hotels are offering packages that are ideal for couples looking to be romanced in the principality such as the ‘Love is in the air’ package offered by Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo which even includes a helicopter ride over the French Riviera. French couture brand Lanvin’s artistic director Alber Elbaz has dressed the hotel to showcase the unity between fashion and romance.

Lets not forget other major draws for the incentive market that include the Monte Carlo Rolex Tennis Open (April), the 69th Monaco Formula One Monaco Grand Prix (May), and the Grimaldi Forum brings together the Vienna Philharmonic, Zubin Mehta and Daniel Barenboim in June.

Royal weddings don’t come around everyday so Monaco intends to make the most of the ripple effect!
